In functional fluid applications, Susterra® can be used in applications such as deicing and heat transfer fluids and as a base for engine coolants where stability over a range of temperatures is important.
Benefits
- In deicing applications, 100% renewably sourced Susterra® provides low toxicity and biodegradability.
- Susterra® delivers excellent freeze point depression for aqueous solution applications that require freeze protection.
- In coolant applications, Susterra® offers manufacturers and suppliers an alternative glycol coolant base that functions effectively to provide protection against freezing, boiling, corrosion and cavitation.
ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants Approves 1,3-Propanediol (PDO)
DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products is excited to announce that 1,3-Propanediol (PDO) has been approved by the ASTM International Committee D15 on Engine Coolants for use as an Engine Coolant Base. This approval offers coolant manufacturers and suppliers an alternative glycol coolant base that functions effectively to provide protection against freezing, boiling, corrosion, and cavitation.
In response to more restrictive emissions regulations and consumer expectations, PDO based coolants can offer prevention from premature coolant degradation, lower maintenance and lower lifetime cost technologies for cooling systems, and better oxidation resistance than traditional glycols. The main users of these standards would be engine coolant manufacturers and their customers, mechanical engineering contractors and suppliers of power generation and emergency power generation systems.
During the October 2006 D15 meeting, PDO was presented to the Committee for consideration and was subsequently followed by the formation of a D15 PDO Task Group in March 2007. Between March 2007 and May 2009, the PDO Task Group and its 45 members successfully accomplish the introduction and adoption of 1,3-Propanediol. The approval process included four ASTM standards which are available via the ASTM website, http://www.astm.org. Read Press Release.
- E7388 – Standard Sppecification for Engine Coolant Grade 1,3-Propanediol (PDO)
- D7515 – Standard Test Method for Purity of 1,3-Proopanediol (Gas Chromatographic Method)
- D7517 – Standardd Specification for Fully-Formulated 1,3 Propanediol (PDO) Base Engine Coolant for Heavy-Duty Engines
- D7518 – Standard Specification for 1,3 Propanediol (PDO) Base Engine Coolant for Automobile and Light-Duty Service
Susterra® Propanediol Achieves NSF International Nonfood Compounds Registration
Ingredient for use in Heat Transfer Fluids with Incidental Food Contact (HTX-1)
DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products is excited to announce that Susterra® propanediol has NSF International Nonfood Compounds Registration. Susterra® is now approved as an ingredient for use in heat transfer fluids with incidental food contact (HTX-1). Producers seeking to register with NSF can now use Susterra® as the base coolant in fluids that will go into systems that require incidental food contact.
Made from corn sugar, Susterra® propanediol offers formulators and suppliers a 100% renewably sourced glycol base that meets the NSF International Registration Guidelines for Proprietary Substances and Nonfood Compounds. Formulators using NSF Registered Ingredients need only identify the Susterra® propanediol name, the NSF Registration No. 141749, and concentration of Susterra® in the finished product on their respective application form. The NSF listing for Susterra® is now available at the NSF website http://www.nsf.org/usda/Listings.asp. Read Press Release.
